In exciting breaking news, Tidewater Players is ecstatic to announce auditions for the Maryland Premiere of the new revised London version of CHESS. With music by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus, the creative half of international pop music legends ABBA, and lyrics by Tim Rice, renowned for his work with Andrew Lloyd Webber (Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Supertar, Evita) and Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), this iconic score with an all new book in concert version is based on the cold war era world chess championships of the 80s between reigning Russian champion Boris Spassky and upcoming American bad boy Bobby Fisher. The story of two world class rivals, the political factors of the day that drive them, and the woman that comes between them, CHESS features sweeping power ballads like “Someone Else’s Story”, “Nobody’s Side”, and “I Know Him So Well” (popularized by Whitney and Cissy Houston), as well as upbeat pop numbers like the quintessential “One Night In Bangkok”, the last song from a Broadway musical cast album to top the Billboard Charts. Andersson, Ulvaeus, and Rice weave a fascinating fusion of pop/rock, neoclassical, and European folk music into one of the most glorious singers’ scores ever composed.
